At first glance, Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales is a place where nature is booming. This landscape of blanket bogs, deep peat, ponds, grassland, and woodland attracts a variety of wildlife, including butterflies, birds, and rare plants. The area’s unusual alkaline and acidic conditions and mineral-rich lake help nature thrive. In addition, the peatland stores carbon and nurtures rare plants such as insectivorous sundew and several species of sphagnum moss.

But this delicate and complex network of habitats is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Prolonged dry spells and heavy rain are eroding peat, damaging stone walls and restricting access. From introducing grazing ponies that support the growth of sphagnum moss to putting wave breakers in the tarn, several measures have been taken to protect the area against the worst effects of climate change. Watch this video to find out more about how the National Trust is caring for this special landscape so it can be enjoyed by future generations.
