Things I learned when learning this song (#IveWitnessedIt @passionmusic)
- This @elliottguitars #Raven is a BEAUTY to behold and the bridge humbucker may be my new favorite thing ever. I’m still waiting on the #Warhawk I ordered from Elliott nearly 2 years ago but this Raven (owned by my good friend @petercwilson) is scratching that Elliott itch. But truth be told, the guitar I’m going to use on this song on Sunday is actually my @duesenbergguitars #StarplayerTV since that neck P90 really really suits the song…which brings me to number 2..
- @briancarl (or whoever tracked EG1) has a KILLER woody/crispy neck position tone that I NEED and can’t seem to get yet. I’m close…but not totally there. Someone enlighten me.
- I’m learning how to use the @hologram_electronics #Microcosm more and more. And one of the things I love it for is adding a glittery ambient bed (very very much like a keyboard part) under single note lines. Though I’m not showing it here, in Chorus 1 I use it to add a ton of texture to the lead line (since I’m going to be the only guitar and mute all SIX guitars in the tracks) which really helps fill the room but it doesn’t even really sound like a guitar is making the sound at all. It’s rad. (Also…I’m going to make my Microcosm presets available soonish…yes, there’s a way to share presets).
- I’m using my AC30/Prosonic Clean #tonex captures as usual but I actually made some adjustments on them I’m really liking—I turned the Gain down to 4 and the Presence down to 3 on both models. I wanted a little more headroom and little less brightness…a LITTLE. And it worked. Finally my boosts really do add more volume, not just saturate the amps more. Headroom is SUCH an important part of tone dialing.
- When a part calls for a slide (like on this instrumental), stick it to the man and DON’T use a slide. The part sounds great without it and it’s easier to be IN TUNE 🫣. Slide’s tough, guys. It just is. But when I do use a slide, I reach for my @silicasound 423 Heavy Shorty.
- The beginning parts on this song use a subtle reverse delay which is rad because I just dialed in a reverse delay preset for #TheLordWillProvide and it sounds the same…it’s almost as if the same guitar player played on both…anyway, I love learning how others do it. In this case the reverse delay helps your tone sustain without an obvious “delay” sound. The repeats aren’t distinct so it’s almost like a reverb…but cooler. Try it! Or try mine!
