‘Learning a language is the simplest thing in the world. The principle is tried and tested: habit formation. You listen to the phrase, you repeat the phrase, you learn the phrase. Easy – peasy’. Methodological objections aside, it helps if you actually repeat the right phrase… :-)

EV: ‘My brother is in the garden.’
FV: ‘Mon frère est dans le jardin. – répéter’.
EV: My brother is in the garden. *
FV: ‘Where is the bicycle?’
EV: ‘Où est la bisyclette? – répéter’.
FV: Where is the bicycle? *
F: Tim – what are you doing?
T: I’m learning French. It’s really easy. * As long as you ignore what the second woman is saying… I don’t know what the hell she is on about! * I think she might be a bit mad. Or as they say in France: ‘I think she might be a bit mad’… *
