If you let cells sit in a Petri dish, they quickly die and/or become very unlike what they would otherwise be if they were inside of a human body. However, if you spin cells around and feed them nutrients, they feel more at home, and they act more like they would act if they were inside of a human body. As a result, spinning cells can help test drugs and perform other medical tests in an environment that more closely simulates a human body, without actually performing human trials.
