Greedy Man Destroyed National Park for Profit (and How It Recovered)
This is the story of Elwha River Dam that was built in 1913. Olympic National Park ecosystem and the river itself suffered by degradation of salmon population caused by dam's construction.
Dam was removed in 2011 followed by removal of second dam in 2014. Since that time there is a process of restoration the ecosystem. First effects are already visible but it will take more time to heal all the impacts made by dams.
Even water power plan seems to be clean source of energy, this example showed that it can affect environment. The video shows how symbiotic ecosystems works together to florish and explains why Hoh Rainforest is the wettest place in continental USA. Each year 3.5 meters of rain falls in this location. Hoh forest is a prime example of tempered rainforests that spans through the entire pacific northwest.
The first salmon ceremony was popular among the native tribes of Pacific Northwest. Creation of dam affects this sacred rituals and impacted culture of tribes living in Olympic Peninsula.
Olympic National Park is one of the most remarcable places in western America. Most people come here in summer but late spring might be the best time to visit to witness the greenery of mosses in the Hoh Forest.
