Helium has launched it’s brand new Hotspot in an attempt to decentralize data networks, telecom, and potentially the internet by utilizing radio signals and IoT devices. While this is not a Wifi replacement yet, it certainly has cornered a great market. Helium has caught the eyes of investors such as Google Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Marc Benioff, including a new $15 million Series C round co-led by Union Square Ventures and Multicoin Capital. Their total funding to date is $51 million!

Helium is an open source platform, and their hotspots give network builders the opportunity to “own a piece of a network like AT&T,” in the words of Helium COO, Frank Mong. Additionally, IoT devices have a very long battery life. GPS is highly data heavy, and takes a lot of energy to run. This is the vision behind Helium’s decentralized data network. LongFi will allow efficient data usage, and 1 IoT device can serve information to thousands of devices in its range.

Hotspot owners gain Helium Tokens in two ways:
1. Transferring data to and from devices
2. Building and maintaining the network:
Challenges (encrypted message puzzles)
Proof of Coverage
Witnesses (conversing with other devices to prove the network is covered in an area)
Consensus Groups (unanimous groups that give highly valid data because of a strong network presence)

4 big players have also started utilizing and developing prototypes for this network, including: Lime Bike, Nestle, InivisiLeash (dog leash start-up that is revolutionizing run away pups), and Agulus (agriculture company).
