My Dog Has DEMON EYES! (The real story behind my husky’s eyes)
So many people wonder what’s wrong with Skaya’s eyes. Is she possessed? Is she half-demon? Is she blind? In this video, we’ll discuss the truth behind her eyes: heterochromia.
Skaya has a condition called heterochromia iridis. Her form of heterochromia is congenital (although sometimes, heterochromia can be acquired through trauma to the eye or disease). Eye colour is determined by the amount of melanin present in the iris; dark eyes have larger amounts of melanin, and paler eyes have less. Heterochromia occurs when there is a different concentration of melanin in each eye.
Heterochromia is rare but is most commonly seen in Siberian Huskies (like Skaya). About 15-20% of Siberian Huskies are born with heterochromia, each with different varying degrees of blue, brown, or other colours. Some huskies (and other dogs and animals) have sectoral (or partial) heterochromia. This means that different sections of each iris have different colours.
Heterochromia also occurs in different dog breeds (like Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, Corgis, Shelties, Dalmations and more), other animals (like cats, for example), and even humans (think of David Bowie!)
Skaya’s heterochromia is perfectly harmless. She has no vision problems or blindness of any kind. Is the part-demon, though? Well, based on her personality, I’ll let you determine that yourself. ;)
