Alphas in zbrush can do a lot of work for you when texturing a creature. This very quick video shows three methods.
1: Drag onto the surface
2: Apply to surface with noisemaker
3: Mask by noisemaker then further enhance
version 3 is how I create a lot of detail work on my sculptures as pushing the unmasked surface details into the model preserves a lot more of the alphas original details.
