Cherry pruning in spring should be done before sap flow begins. The cherry tree needs regular pruning no less than the apple tree. Cherry trees need to be pruned very carefully, strictly following the deadlines and avoiding wide cuts. The tendency to thicken the crown of cherries is higher than that of any other fruit tree. Proper pruning of a cherry tree involves removing vertically growing branches and forming horizontal growth so that the tree is spreading.
How to trim a cherry tree:
First, shoots located at an acute angle to the trunk are removed, then those located parallel to the trunk. When pruning branches, do not leave a stump or deep recess. In both the first and second cases, healing will be a long and painful process. Trimming should be done under the ring. The cut area must be treated with garden varnish (from rosin, paraffin and fat) or another solution. It is enough to shorten it by a third, unless other purposes require it.
