It's not the best material in the world, in many ways, but it does hold up for years under the right circumstances, and alternatives all have trade-offs. For better or worse, it is the material of the Amazon interior.
It is also uncomfortable on a hot day, even with perforations (both intentional and acquired), but in my car is it at least holding up?
