Drawing with dark pencil on white paper is by far the most common way to draw. This ubiquitous method of drawing seems so natural that we rarely question it. But this way of drawing is the opposite of how light actually works.

If you truly want to understand shading and how light and shadow really work, you must learn to draw on black paper with white pencil. To draw something on black paper, we must draw with light and illuminate the objects in our drawings with white pencil the same way light illuminates objects in reality.

In this video you’re going to learn how to create light and shadow studies with white pencil on black paper.By drawing with light on black paper, you will gain an entirely new understanding of how to shade when you draw with the more traditional dark pencil on light paper.
