Thanks to the great detail contained within Star Wars lore, we know practically everything about Darth Vader’s armor. Rather amusingly, this also includes the disturbing and outright disgusting way in which the Dark lord went to the toilet. And since we very well may see Vader or Anakin again in Ahsoka I thought it would be fun to do a deep dive into Vader’s suit, looking at how it worked, what his buttons did and how he ate. And of course, we will also do a deep dive into the most important question in Star Wars Lore, How the Dark Lord went for a big steamy sith.

Before we begin, a quick update on the channel and the lightsaber giveaway. I’ve finally finished my university degree, so I’ll be sure to be uploading much more here on this channel, on my main channel, and also on my history channel, history of Conflict. In regard to the lightsaber giveaway, that will end on the same date as the final episode of Ahsoka. As a reminder, I’ll be giving away a lightsaber of the winner's choice from the VF sabers range. So make sure to check out the catalogue using this link in case you win. All you have to do to enter is describe your ideal lightsaber. The lightsaber design I like best will be the winner. This can be as imaginative as you like. The last winner described a golden trident lightsaber with three black blades, so really let your creativity run wild. Best of luck everyone, and may the force be with you.

Anyway, back to the video.

As you, no doubt already know, as a result of the wounds received on Mustafar during combat with Obi-wan Kenobi, Vader effectively became completely reliant on the self-contained life-support system that is Darth Vader’s suit. Vader's artificial limbs and the complete set of functions of his armor were energized by a multitude of rechargeable power cells distributed within the suit, enabling Vader to journey for extensive periods without the need to rejuvenate his armor. Moreover, a number of enhancements were embedded into four of his vital internal organs. Specifically, a heart implant replaced his biological heart and blood vessels by pumping blood, The vascular implant managed the circulation of blood; and the breathing implant spread oxygen through the remaining living tissues. All these enhancements were linked through a robust central conduit to the torso's computer, with an extra collection of wires linking the lungs and windpipe. In conjunction, these pulmonary, respiratory and other life support systems kept Vader alive, albeit only just.

In novels and comics, the Sith Lord makes it clear that his armor is pretty poorly made, with this likely being intentional. The ill-fitting armor plates painfully snagged on his torn flesh as he moved. In addition, the synthetic flesh they used to replace his old skin itched constantly. It also had painful needles that were inserted into his head to communicate with his mind, as well as a monitoring panel on his chest that frequently beeped for no reason. As a result, the dark lord was unable to unwind or get more rest than an occasional patch of sleep.

The suit's weight was another factor that aggravated Vader. Due to its cumbersome nature, Vader's spine, one of the few parts of his body that escaped injury after the battle with Obi-wan, actually needed to be substantially replaced over time because it was unable to hold the weight of the massive suit that was fitted to him

The equipment was also noticeably unreliable with parts frequently breaking down in various parts of his life-support system. The suit was made using outdated technology, with even General Grievous's decades-old suit being far superior to Darth Vader's in many ways, particularly when it came to freedom of movement.

You might be wondering at this point why the Empire did not just have a more appropriate suit created for Vader, one that would be more comfortable, far less prone to damage, and more powerful. They could have performed reconstructive somatic surgeries to make him appear more or less normal if they hadn't been constrained by their limited equipment and budget. Although such a suit had been designed, without the Emperor's assistance to keep him alive throughout the transfer of his body from one suit to the other, the surgery would probably end in the Vaders demise. Even with Palpatine’s help, it still would have been a very perilous procedure. And of course, Palpatine had no desire to increase Vader’s power with a new suit as he was well aware that this could lead to his own demise. However, it must be noted that it wasn’t the suit itself that kept Vader in check. Or at the very least, it wasn’t the primary reason.
