Regular monitoring and inspection of underwater facilities such as oil and gas pipelines is essential to protect people and the marine environment. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are already being used for this purpose. They are still deployed and recovered by large supply ships on the high seas – a risky and expensive endeavor.

In the CIAM project, nine partners from industry and research, led by the Rosenxt Group, are developing a new generation of intelligent AUVs that do not require additional ships. They will be able to cover long distances autonomously to monitor deep-sea installations at different locations.
If the robots run out of power over long distances, autonomous charging stations that dock independently to the AUVs can recharge the batteries. The partners are testing this process in DFKI's Maritime Exploration Hall in Bremen, which is unique in Europe.

CIAM is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWK).
