Pole-and-line fishing is generally believed to have originated in the Maldives many centuries ago, making it an important part of the Maldivian identity. In the 21st century, the country’s one-by-one tuna fisheries support some 30,000 livelihoods and contribute more than 15% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
