In a technical-commercial institute in Rome, the student Maddalena Lenci discovers among the papers of Professor Malgari a love letter addressed to an imaginary recipient, featured in a correspondence exercise.
In the letter, addressed to Alfredo Hartman, the writer expresses a desire to meet this seemingly fictional recipient—who, in reality, actually exists.
Eva, an external student, gets hold of the letter and mistakenly sends it to the address written in the header. The letter is successfully delivered to Alfredo Hartman, a wealthy industrialist from Vienna.
Intrigued, Alfredo becomes determined to meet the girl who wrote it. He sets off for Rome, where he meets his cousin, who helps him in his search at the institute attended by Maddalena.
Thus begins a comedy of misunderstandings that culminates in a double wedding.
