Welcome to another video. This one is a little different from the usual lifestyle content we produce, but since so many of you asked for more regular videos, Patrick and I have decided to take your requests on board. We’ll do our best to publish an extra video during the week! These videos will be based around topics that inspire us or that we feel passionate about — but don’t worry, our usual lifestyle content will still be uploaded on Fridays!
To those of you who may be new to the channel: I’m Natasha, an Australian living in Moscow. I started learning to speak Russian several years ago, and that simple decision opened unexpected doors and opportunities in my life. A spontaneous choice one morning to start learning Russian ended up changing the trajectory of everything.
After living here for three months (actually four now, since filming this video), I’ve become aware of many cultural differences in Russia. Aside from the ones mentioned in this video, I also wanted to highlight one of the most notable differences — the emphasis on formality and respect in social interactions. Russians often use formal titles and maintain a certain degree of reserve when meeting new people, which might come off as aloofness to those from more informal cultures. I see it as a sign of traditional respect — something that feels deeply courteous, even graceful.
Embracing these differences has been both eye-opening and enriching. They've helped me grow, challenged my assumptions, and given me a deeper appreciation for Russian culture and its unique way of life. I’m so grateful for the chance to share this journey with you all.
So, after living here for a few months, I can honestly say that Russia continues to surprise me—in the best ways. From cultural traditions to everyday habits, so much has been unexpected, eye-opening, and fascinating. As an Australian in Moscow, I’m learning to embrace the differences and see the beauty in them. Thank you for watching, and I hope this gave you a little insight into what life here feels like from my perspective.
