On 3 November 1956, British Prime Minister Anthony Eden made a televised address to explain why Britain had deployed troops to the Suez Canal Zone.

In his speech, Eden argued that Britain intervened militarily in response to Israel's invasion of Egypt, which the UK government believed was "likely to lead to a widespread flare-up in the Middle East".

What Eden did not tell the British public was that both Israel's invasion of Egypt and Britain's intervention thereafter were part of a secret plan agreed between Britain, Israel, and France aimed at reclaiming control of the Suez Canal.
