The 2S43 Malva is a new Russian truck-mounted howitzer. It is based on a BAZ 8x8 heavy high mobility chassis.
Conceptual designs of this artillery system were first revealed in 2019. The prototype was first publicly revealed in 2020. Testing of this new Russian artillery system began in 2021. Currently there is no information weather or when it will be adopted by the Russian Army.
The Malva can be seen as an alternative to a 2S35-1 Koalitsiya-SV Ksh truck-mounted howitzer. Its lighter and its wheeled chassis offers better cross-country mobility. It can self-deploy over long distances without the need of a semi-trailer. Also artillery system is more cost-efficient to maintain and to operate than other Russian artillery systems, based on tracked chassis. Though it looses in terms of off-road performance to tracked artillery systems.
The Malva is fitted with a 152 mm ordnance. It is an improved version of the 2A88 cannon, used on the latest 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV self-propelled howitzer. It has a maximum range of 24.5 km. It is slightly less than the the current 2S19 Msta-S can reach. Furthermore it looses in terms of range to the older 2S5 Giatsint 152 mm howitzer and the latest 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV that can reach 30-70 km.
Maximum rate of fire is up to 7 rounds per minute. A total of 30 rounds are carried for the main gun.
A prototype that was displayed in 2020 had no defensive armament. Though it is likely that if this artillery system will ever reach production it will be fitted with a 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun.
Vehicle has an armored cab. It provides protection of the crew against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters.
This artillery system uses BAZ-6010-027 heavy high mobility chassis. It is a purpose designed military vehicle, that can operate off road. It is powered by a YaMZ-8424.10 diesel engine, developing 470 hp. The engine is mated to a 9-speed transmission.
