Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. His mother, Maye Musk, is a Canadian-South African model and dietitian, and his father, Errol Musk, is a South African electromechanical engineer, pilot, and sailor. Elon showed an early interest in technology and entrepreneurship. At the age of 10, he developed an interest in computing with the Commodore VIC-20. He taught himself computer programming and, by age 12, sold the code for a BASIC-based video game called Blastar to a magazine called PC and Office Technology for approximately $500.
Musk attended Waterkloof House Preparatory School and later graduated from Pretoria Boys High School. In his youth, he was often bullied and once hospitalized after a group of boys pushed him down a flight of stairs and beat him until he lost consciousness. Despite these challenges, Musk remained focused on his interests in science and technology.
In 1989, at the age of 17, Musk moved to Canada to attend Queen’s University, avoiding mandatory service in the South African military. He obtained Canadian citizenship that same year, partly because he felt it would be easier to obtain American citizenship via that path. After two years at Queen’s University, Musk transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned two bachelor's degrees: one in economics from the Wharton School and another in physics.
Musk’s academic journey didn't stop there. He moved to California to begin a Ph.D. in applied physics at Stanford University but left the program after just two days, choosing instead to pursue a career in business and technology, believing that the internet had much more potential to change society than work in physics. This decision marked the beginning of his journey as a tech entrepreneur, eventually leading to the creation of companies like Zip2, X.com (which later became PayPal), Tesla, SpaceX, and many more.
Elon Musk's early life was marked by a blend of ambition, resilience, and a profound interest in technology, setting the stage for his future ventures and innovations.
