You may fondly remember the Sega Master System but did you know it wasn’t actually Sega’s first console? Sega released the SG-1000 in 1983 in Japan and Australasia, followed up by the SG-1000 Mark II in 1984, which saw a change to the appearance of the original model. But it was the Mark III, available in 1985, that saw an improvement to the hardware with its more advanced video display chip and more RAM. Mark III was later given a new look and named the Master System, which was released worldwide from 1986.
While many Mark III games were ported to the Master System the Western releases did not take advantage of the improved sound provided by the FM Sound Unit add-on for the Mark III and built into the Japanese Master System launched in 1987.
For each of the Mark III games featured in this video my goal was to get past the first level/stage/section, easier said than done for some of them. I used the MasterGear emulator, which you can download from:
https://fms.komkon.org/MG/
I discovered after recording the clips that by changing MasterGear’s audio setting to 44KHz Wave Synthesis from the default 22KHz it improved the sound quality. This was a particular issue with Super Wonder Boy Monster World, which I had to re-record due to a clicking sound that was constantly heard, however, even with the audio setting change there is still some clicking.
Please let me know if you would like me to show more games for the Mark III or Master System in a future video.
