Firstly, Ten years ago, Cat Footwear launched boots with a design that sought to combine Jobsite-tested durability with the comfort of a hiking boot or high top. They called this design SuperDuty iTechnology. The Excavator XLs make a pretty good first impression. True to the SuperDutyXL iTech mission statement, they offer a feel and flex more akin to hiking boots than the steel-toed shoes of old. Just like Cat prides itself in making machines that last for decades, its footwear brand wants the ExcavatorXL to be the last boot you buy for a while. New on the ExcavatorXL is a rubber toe bumper that reduces wear and tears to the toe box, lets you kick through gravel, and gives wood and blocks a good nudge or knock without worrying about damaging the boot or feeling as much shock to your feet. Another durability feature of these boots is the TecTuff material around the heel that resists abrasion while upping protection. Cat says while the toe box gets most of the wear on a pair of boots, the heel finishes a close second. This TecTuff material should adequately the bumps and scuffs the boots are subjected to throughout the day and allow you to kick the boots off without worrying about damaging the construction of the heel.
KEEN Utility's Chicago work boots are as comfortable as you can get for a real work boot. The construction quality is evident to the touch, the eye, and the try-on feel. Crisp stitching, clean, straight lines, and generous use of full-grain leather dotted with quality hook, and hole hardware set the product apart. The break-in time is much shorter than an all-leather "heritage" work boot. KEEN incorporates fabric in the upper flex zones and decent forefoot flex in the sole, making these feel wonderful on the feet right out of the box. The boots aren't insulated but are lined with KEEN Utility's proprietary bootie liner. It helps trap heat, providing enough "R-value" to work into the low 30s. KEEN's Chicago boots are at home doing real work. They're relatively heavy and stiff, but not more than they need to be. They deliver the protection and support you need in a utility boot without being overly uncomfortable.
