Brain-based illnesses and injuries are the leading cause of disability worldwide. However, medical professionals lack the tools needed to diagnose and treat illnesses ranging from Alzheimer's disease to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Gaining traction in this vast field will not only require targeted research funding, but potentially also a change in the way the brain is studied. Policy makers, funders, industry experts, and researchers will discuss how the field of neuroscience research will need to adapt and the specific role of public-, private-, and philanthropic-research funding required to accomplish the audacious but necessary goal of curing brain-disease.
