Over the star wars timeline, we have seen many wars, both in legends, comics and live action. Although these wars are focused mostly on the fight between the Jedi and the Sith, the introduction of the clone and sepratist armies saw new ways to fight. And with them came many weapons of war, some terrifying, destructive and intimidating. Some however were strange in both appearance and functionality, but all were designed around one thing - the destruction of their enemy.
In this video, we will be taking a look at the top 7 star wars tanks you’ve never heard of.
Starting at number 7 we have the:
Wookie Battle Scythe
This tank was developed by the Wookies to be an armoured transport, and assault vehicle. Just like siege rams of ancient times were used to break into towns and fortresses, the Battle Scythe was used by the Wookies to break into enemy formations, fortifications or severely damage other vehicles. It had immensely thick armour, and was triangular shaped, with a heavy plow on the front for extra punching power. The Scythe was able to withstand continuous fire, even from some of the Empire’s largest guns. Once it had broken through a defense, or disabled another vehicle, the 15 heavily armed Wookies that rode in the Scythe would dismount, and fight to secure a breachead or take an important objective. The Scythe itself had 3 heavy blaster cannons on turrets, and could pick a fight with most lightly armored or transport vehicles. Its thick armour however had a downside, as it was slow and cumbersome due to the weight and thickness of the plating. This meant it was vulnerable to lighter more maneuverable attack craft, and if surrounded could be easily destroyed or immobilized.
Coming in at number 6, we have the
Tank Droid Mark 4
This autonomous tank featured in the Jedi Civil War, and was armed with a large range of weaponry, including a Rocket Launcher, Grenade launcher, blaster cannons, and even a flamethrower. Little is known about the tanks, but they were supposedly programmed to guard military bases from attack. It maneuvered using two large legs, but was very clunky and therefore very cumbersome. Due to its large size, and slow movement, it was ineffective against the silent and quick Jedi, especially due to its slow reaction time.
At number 4, we have the
MZ-8 Mobile Pulse Cannon / Plasma Tank
This tank is probably the most recognisable in today’s world, with similar features to prototype tank destroyers, such as the T28 Super Heavy Tank. Its low elevation would have allowed it to be concealed easily, and be harder to hit with returning fire. During the Galactic Civil War, this tank was used by Tyber Zann to great effect, and in larger numbers, could even damage the heavily armored AT-AT walkers, and could often 1 shot an AT-ST in one hit. However, due to its slow mobility, it was vulnerable to infantry, and had to be supported if it was going to be effective. Crews were even known to self destruct the plasma in the tank, if the enemy had encircled them, causing immense damage.
Coming in at number 3, we have the
Bogg Behemoth
Probably the biggest land tank ever created in star wars, the Bogg Behemoth was created for the Separatists during the Clone Wars. Although never featured in the animated series, it did briefly feature in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Comic UK 6.17, and was mentioned in "The Runaway Ride"—Star Wars: The Clone Wars Comic UK 6.50. What we know of the tank from the one confirmed image we have of it, is that it was a land crawler, and was probably used to cleave a path of destruction with it’s triangular plow on its front. We do not know what weapons it featured, or how big it was in comparison to other vehicles, but from what Obi Wan said:
..the Council advised caution… and when dealing with a new breed of landtank, especially one of this magnitude, I have good reason to concur."
("Burn the Behemoth!"—Star Wars: The Clone Wars Comic UK 6.17)
…we know it was a considerable size, and powerful enough for the Jedi Council to advise caution.
However, the Bogg Behemoth never saw action that we know of, and was destroyed when Anakin and Obi Wan captured the landship, and destroyed it.
