This criminal investigation started in the city of Odessa in August of 1965, at the peak of a vacations season. Early in the morning, plasterer Zinaida Subbota knocked on the window of a room rented by a young couple from Leningrad, Sergey and Anna Semyonov. The woman wanted to claim back her painting tools. Noticing that the door was open, she walked in to see a dead woman with a wound on her temple lying on the floor. Her husband was not there.
