Indonesia is the world’s largest palm oil exporter, and much of that is grown on the island of Borneo in Kalimantan. So as we rode our motorcycle across the entire region, we realized that palm oil is hard to miss. In fact, considering that palm oil makes up 11% of Indonesia’s export economy, I’m not surprised to see that it was grown absolutely everywhere.

But because pristine rainforest has been cleared for palm oil production, the industry is very controversial. And so as we made our way through Kalimantan, we decided to take a little excursion into a palm oil plantation, and learn all that we can about the pros and cons of this product.
