A mastering chain is simply the order your effect plugins are in. There is no right or wrong way when it comes the best mastering chain and ordering your effect plugins, but just know that if you do something on one plugin, that audio has been altered BEFORE it goes into the next plugin.
The only golden rule you should be following with a mastering chain is your LOUDNESS METER is the last plugin, and your LIMITER should be the second last plugin.
This LIMITER should be set to -1dB, however, if your limiter doesn't have a "True Peak Limiter" built in like the FabFilter Pro-L 2, then you can still go over -1dBTP (decibel TRUE PEAK) because of "inter-sample peaks".. so you may have to lower the ceiling below -1dB to compensate for this -1dBTP to "comply with loudness standards"..
But I wouldn't get too technical with it if you're just doing this music stuff for fun.. even if you're uploading your music to streaming platforms like Spotify.. this is "broadcast loudness standards".. and not many of us have our music on the radio 🙂
