In this video, we dive into the fascinating history of the Aberford Railway, an abandoned railway line in West Yorkshire built to extract coal from the Gascoigne family collieries. The railway, running from Garforth to Aberford, played a pivotal role in the region's coal mining industry, connecting several pits along its route. Many of the remains of these pits, many which closed over 100 years ago can be seen scattered along the railway. The railway was connected to the Leeds & Selby Railway at one end and the Great North Road at the other end. This forgotten railway line cuts right through the heart of the Parlington Estate.
But there’s one unique feature that stands out: a mysterious railway tunnel known as the Dark Arch—or is it? In this episode, we explore the tunnel on the Aberford Railway that wasn’t actually built for trains. We unravel the story behind this peculiar structure and its true purpose, shedding light on its intriguing connection to the industrial past of Yorkshire. We also see the quirks set on the railway by the land owners of the nearby Parlington Hall - who also built the railway - and the lengths they went to hide the railway from the view - the Light Arch and the Dark Arch, which included a sunken fence (or Ha-ha).
