Doncaster Disused Railway & Disused York Road Station
Hull & Barnsley and Great Central Join Railway Explore
We take a walk on the former HB&GCJR from the fomer Doncaster York Road station towards the River Don near Warmsworth. The old ine is now part of the Trans-Pennine Trail network. The Doncaster end is also known as the Doncaster Greenway.
The York Road station opened in 1916 however it didnt actually see any scheduled passenger trains. The station sat there until the 1960s where it was closed and demolished. The site of the station sat at the junction of the old A1 (Great North Road) and A19 (Selby Road), just to the north of Doncaster.
The line itself closed in stages from 1939 to the 1960s.
From the old Doncaster York Road station, we head north and see the site of the old crossing at Pipering Lane, around a mile from Doncaster.
From here we head back down the other side of the triangle towards Warmsworth. Passing under the old Great North Road and skirting alongside the Cusworth Hall estate. A short time later we pass on our right hand side the site of the former Sprotbrough Foundry. The foundry boasts a key role in the 2nd World War where is make track links for some of the world's best known tanks.
After diving under Sprotbrough Road, the line emerges from a cutting towards Sprotbrough Junction, where the line linked with the Doncaster avoiding line.
We then emerge from the trees on to the large steel structure bridge which spans the River Don. One of 3 large bridges crossing the river. The others being the A1 motorway and the Doncaster Avoiding line.
The line then disappears in to the landscape. From here through the village of Warmsworth, the route of the line has been developed and very little evidence is visible of any sign of railway.
