I was in need of a high quality, compact and portable PA that I could use for microphone and singing masterclasses. I wanted sufficient clarity to reveal the differences between mikes and it must go low enough to demonstrate proximity effect. I would like to be able to take everything on a 'classy' barrow so I can get around London and elsewhere by train/tube, saving parking headaches and my carbon footprint.

Andertons Music Co. in Guildford, had everything in stock and it proved to be an excellent, unhurried, educational and enjoyable experience. A fantastic example of what 'bricks & mortar' shopping has to offer.

For some time I had in mind the Barefaced FR800 powered speaker which I felt sure would be great, combining massive power, accuracy, full bandwidth, reasonable size and light weight. It's very expensive and I would have to use it with a small mixer. I tried to trial one about a year ago but none were in stock, I tried again this year and they are no longer being made so the hunt was on for an alternative.

Music used for testing: Chronixx 'Skankin' Sweet'.
