While most of the world would struggle to name a single Malaysian filmmaker, there is one that even most Malaysians don't know of. That's because every Edmund Yeo movie has never been shown in cinemas of his home country.
In this video essay, we take a look at Malaysian director Edmund Yeo and his body of work, to understand the themes and social commentary he infuses into his art, and his thoughts on the filmmaking process and film culture. Edmund Yeo is a Malaysian film writer/director/producer. His award-winning films include short films like Kingyo, Inhalation, and Last Fragments of Winter; and full-length features like Aqerat and River of Exploding Durians. His list of accolades involve awards from the Venice Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival, and Busan International Film Festival.
