UNICEF Malaysia, with the Office of the Children’s Commissioner (OCC) and the Department of Social Welfare, brought together fifty-five young people (aged 11-18) to participate in the ‘International Symposium on Empowerment of Children’s Commissions’ organised by the Prime Minister's Office (Law and Institutional Reform), the OCC, and Delegation of the EU to Malaysia.
The young people played a key role in informing the OCC on child rights issues most important to them, their recommendations on strengthening child participation mechanisms, and presented letters on ‘Their Hopes and Dreams for All Children in Malaysia’. Their opinions and recommendations will inform the OCC on its institutional reform plans and its role on strengthening the promotion of children’s rights, following on from the legislative amendment passed in December 2023 empowering the OCC on its role and independence.
