Until Friday, it looked like the market was ready to give up and give back last year’s returns. Stocks had sold off every day of the new year and investors were getting scared. Don’t let the selloff fool you. There is good reason to believe 2024 will be a very good year. In fact, I’ll detail why it’s starting to look a lot like the mid-90s and where we were at just before one of the best bull markets in history.
If you’re a short-term trader then you need to make decisions based on market sentiment and technicals for where stocks might go over the next days or month. If you’re a long-term investor though, look further out and have the confidence in your outlook and that the environment for stocks this year could be the start of a very strong period of returns.
The 2024 stock market is looking a lot like what we saw in the 90s. The Fed raised rates and hit stocks but managed a soft landing. The rest is history with one of the best bull markets we've every had. If the scenario does play out, mid-cycle stocks should do especially well over the next year. That includes stocks in the industrials sector like chemical makers as well as regional banks and stocks of small companies but in this kind of a bull market, everyone with the courage to stay invested will make money!
