The Eternal Ordeal (Spells and Spiders)
An old challenge suggested by Pedro Lucas Silva Bastos, Honscrow el topo, BananaKing, and Adamantium to do the Eternal Ordeal with spells. There was a good bit of luck with this run at points. I am satisfied with at least getting slightly over 57 kills.
I put this off for ages thinking it'd be too easy only to find there are quite a few problems doing it this way. Soul generation is the biggest one. Other than the initial Zote the Mighty, only the winged/hopper zotelings can be dream nailed for soul and as the fight goes on your opportunities to do so decrease. As everything takes two or more shade souls to kill (unless you double hit), the passive soul gain from Kingsoul is not enough. I opted to add weaverlings with grubsong to help generate even more soul with the disadvantage of overcharming (technically not spells only as a result but given the high health pools weaverlings aren't that big a damage source).
Once Zotubras begin spawning you'll lose soul faster than you can generate it requiring you to have stockpiled soul to kill them ASAP or else be stuck without any soul and having to hope something kills Zotubra for you. As it's unlikely you can generate enough soul in between spawns to keep up with Zotubras and keep everything else under control indefinitely, a spells only challenge seems to hit a wall.
It's still pretty fun to do, especially locking Zote the Mighty into a loop of dream nail and shade soul at the beginning.
