Hello everyone!

My name is Rob Salmon and I’m writing this month’s Blog post to announce I am part of the Miami Horror team!

If you’re new to the community, you might not have heard of me as I’ve not released anything in a long while. My biggest contribution was the Hotline Miami 2 editor campaign A Real Human Bean (the only known level Dennaton has played) as well as my total conversion editor mods Berlin Blitz and Don’t Fear The Reefer. I also made a comprehensive (though a little aged) guide to the Level editor on my youtube page. Making really unique levels that play well has been my focus for the past few years, and I have a lot of experience with HM2’s editor under my belt.

Danny approached me sometime in early 2019 to see if I’d be interested in making levels for Miami Horror. It’s taken a while to familiarize myself with Gamemaker, and the new MH mechanics, but I’ve now reached a point where I’m very comfortable with the software. There’s a lot of convenience I miss from the level editor that Gamemaker’s room editor doesn’t have, but the lack of restrictions is really freeing and exciting!

My first project to learn Gamemaker was to recreate the fan favorite HM2 map Dead Ahead! I made this months ago, but only recently got to adding in all the correct furniture items. It’s completely 1 to 1 in my approximation, only missing the seagulls and dirt/litter isn’t accurate. I also hope you notice all the cool little details Danny’s added in like bloody footprints, better brass ejection physics, metal items sparking when shot and DYNAMIC VOID LIGHTING ™. While the enemy count is accurate, you’ll see the full combo is higher as picking up ammo increases the combo, and reloading pauses it. This allows The Crusader to tactically carry combos from floor to floor if you’re smart about it.

The first thing we learned designing this level was: Dead ahead does not suit Crusader’s playstyle. Whoops. I also gave the player way too many ammo drops, allowing them to shoot to their heart’s content without needing to move as often as they should. The stages I’m creating for Miami Horror will be much better tuned to The Crusader and The Journalist playstyles. I really hope you’ll enjoy them.

Once Miami Horror releases, you’ll be able to play Horror Ahead for yourself, if you can solve the secret…

Good luck!
