The celebrations for the Assumption to Heaven of the Virgin Mary, body and soul, started in the night between 14 and 15 August in the Garden of #Gethsemane, for the vigil of the eve of the Solemnity, when the readings went back over the life and the death of Mary.
A statue of Mary sleeping was carried in a procession with lit torches and songs to the Virgin Mary to the Basilica of the Agony in Gethsemane.
"This year in our vigil we have an extra reason to pray, and it is given by the situation in which we find ourselves, which is a situation of war, not only here in the Holy Land, but in many countries of the world - said the Custos of the Holy Land, Fra Francesco Patton - I must thank the Guardian of Gethsemane, Fra Siniša, who, a few weeks ago, had the idea of dedicating this Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary to prayer for peace".
"For this occasion - Fra Patton continued - we thought together of preparing a special prayer to be submitted for approval to the Patriarch, H.B. Cardinal Pizzaballa, who in turn wished to invite all the faithful of the Patriarchate to use this prayer to ask with faith, through Mary's intercession, for the gift of peace. As is often the case with things born in Jerusalem, this initiative has since been taken up in many parts of the world".
"Tonight, therefore, we look to Mary, we look at what God has done in her, and we firmly believe that nothing is impossible for God: not even transforming this field of battle and death that is the world in which we live into a garden of peace"
