iPad Pro VS MacBook Pro | Apple Silicon M1 Max VS M2 | DaVinci Resolve H.265 video encode speed test

This test is to specifically test the video encoding speeds of the M2 iPad Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro for exporting HEVC H.265 video from DaVinci Resolve.

The source media was Pro Res 422 HQ at 3840x2160 UHD 59.94 FPS, or, 4K 60 FPS. The timeline and protect was also set to the same resolution and frame rate and the H.265 exports were also set to the same resolution and frame rate. Basically, everything was 1:1 from start to finish with no scaling.

Here's some more info about the MacBook and iPad Pro used in this test.

iPad Pro:
Apple Silicon M2 SoC processor
8GB RAM
8 core CPU
10 core GPU
128GB storage

MacBook Pro:
Apple Silicon M1 Max SoC processor
32GB RAM
10 core CPU
32 core GPU
1TB storage

Technical considerations for this type of test, where it's the Apple Silicon Media Accelorators that's being tested:

System RAM had no bearing on either the MacBook or iPad as the task was well within the boundaries of both systems.

Storage size had no bearing on either the MacBook or iPad as they both had enough for storing the playback video file, storing the encoded video file to and also holding any temporary video buffer files from Resolve.

Storage speed had no bearing on either the MacBook or iPad as both their internal SSDs have much higher bandwidths than what was required to perform the tests. Yes, the MacBook's SSD is much faster but the iPad's was beyond what was necessary anyway for this test.

While the M1 Max has more GPU cores than the M2, the GPU cores are not being used for either the decoding or encoding in this type of test.

While the M1 Max has more CPU cores than the M2, the CPU core count even on the M2 is beyond what's necessary for this type of test anyway.

As for the Apple Silicon Media Accelerators for Pro Res and H.264 decoding and encoding. While the M1 Max has more than the M2, both SoCs only use the same amount for this type of test. In fact, I'm yet to see a scenario where any extra accelerators on any of the SoCs are being used simultaneously for any video encoding task.

Other considerations such as memory bandwidth etc. Also have no bearing on the test, as the task of video encoding and the bandwidth of the encoders are below the likes of the memory bandwidth.

Bottom line. This type of test for the video encoding speed is realistically the easiest video processing task that both the M1 Max MacBook Pro and M2 iPad Pro can do. So these results do represent the best that each device can achieve, given the resolution and frame rate. Basically, this is an Apples to Apples, or Apple to Apple test.
