Dear diary...

As spectacular as it is, not an easy region to fly. Constant strong winds blowing between Europe and Africa through Gibraltar strait give just a few shots for nice conditions. Unforgiving terrain with ridges crosswise to prevailing winds, often linked ridge-to-ridge by suspended high voltage wires, or occasional epic highway bridge. On slopes every usable flat piece of land is either a dense settlement or an immense orchard. Long valleys, which offer few places to land (mainly on roads, if one feels adventurous), end up by the sea, sometimes with just a tiny beach. Ridges often end as steep cliffs, going directly to the sea, with no place to land at the bottom. Snow-covered tops of Sierra Nevada loom faintly in the distance, deep inland. Seemingly, this close to the sea thermals should be a bit milder, yet I found them pretty spicy at times, especially after such a long break (5 months without flying). I managed to gather just about 5 hours of airtime (including ridge soaring on La Herradura), in the span of two weeks.

Yet, I regret nothing.
