Liane Moriarty was born in Australia and grew up wanting to be a writer. Her first book was commissioned by her father when she was just ten years old. She went on to work a corporate job, but soon left to pursue her passion for writing.
She found some success with her first three novels - but broke through with global success when she released Big Little Lies.
Renowned Australian TV producer, Bruna Papandrea, was working with Reese Witherspoon. The two were looking for a project that would suit them, as well as their friend Nicole Kidman.
Big Little Lies ticked all the boxes.
Liane said that she got a call that Nicole wanted to meet in Sydney, to discuss ‘optioning’ the book.
“I was thrilled to meet Nicole, but I honestly didn’t think that anything would come of it.
“I can always remember saying to her ‘well, I know not to get too excited.
“And she said, ‘no, no. If we auction at get excited.’ And she was right.”
Big Little Lies was a phenomenon. The show won 8 Emmys, and 4 Golden Globes.
Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, and Bobby Cannavale lead the cast of the miniseries from the creators of Big Little Lies.
Her next success was Nine Perfect Strangers - with a mini-reunion of key players from Big Little Lies at its core, the book by Moriarty with Nicole Kidman and writer-producer David E. Kelley, and an equally impressive cast.
The series is another one of those riddles wrapped in a mystery, managing to pique interest while remaining stingy about disgorging big truths, much less little lies.
