Description
The “Rough and Smooth Boards in a Box” prepare the Child for handwriting. This introductory activity introduces them to the concept of touch, and lays the foundation to developing “lightness of touch”, which prepares the fine motor control required for handwriting.

Features of the Rough and Smooth Boards in a Box
The direct objective is to introduce the Child to the concept of rough and smooth.
Indirectly, the Child:
-learns to focus on their tactile sense
-is introduced to the concept of “lightness of touch”
-improves fine, and gross muscle control
This support material, is an activity found in the Montessori sensorial curriculum.
-First board – introduces the contrast of rough and smooth
-Second board – helps to coordinate finger movement; and to build dexterity; also known as “lightness of touch”
-Third board – introduces gradations of texture from a rough one, through to the roughest texture. A total of 5 different gradations
Size of the Rough and Smooth Boards in a Box
3 Beech wood boards – 24cm x 13.5cm x 1cm / (9½” x 5¼” x ¼”)
Presented in a Beech wood box with a loose lid – 26.5cm x 16cm x 5cm / (10¼” x 5¼” x 2″)
