this is the 4th video lecture regarded to anti-tubercular drugs or drugs used against mycobacteria.
in this video lecture we will explain ethambutol that are 1st line drugs against tuberculosis.
in this video lecture we will explain the following content related to this lecture.
Mechanism of action: Ethambutol works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall through
the inhibition of the synthesis of arabinogalactan, a mycobacterial cell wall constituent. This leads to the death of the bacteria.
Antibacterial activity: Ethambutol has a narrow spectrum of activity and is primarily active
against rapidly growing mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium kansasii.
Mechanism of resistance: Ethambutol resistance can occur through mutations in the gene
encoding for the synthesis of arabinogalactan, leading to changes in the structure of the cell wall
that prevent the drug from binding.
Pharmacokinetics: Ethambutol is well absorbed after oral administration and is widely distributed in the body. It is primarily eliminated through the kidneys and has a half-life of 2-4 hours.
Side effects: Common side effects of ethambutol include vision disturbances (such as blurred
vision, or changes in color perception), gastrointestinal symptoms (such as nausea and vomiting), and loss of appetite. Other side effects include skin rashes and fever.
