This video explores the origins of Father's Day in the United States. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd is credited with first having the idea to celebrate fathers. She was inspired by a sermon about Mother's Day and wanted to find a way to honor her own father who raised her and her siblings on his own. The first Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington in 1910. It took many years for Father's Day to become an official national holiday. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law making Father's Day a permanent holiday celebrated every year on the third Sunday in June.
