A Stepan Polyakov Film
Star - His Majesty Simeon II of Bulgaria – as Himself

It was the 1870s - a new era in the history of a war-weary Europe. At this time, with very few exceptions, Europe was ruled by monarchs. Sovereigns who in their majority were related to each other, spoke without ceremony among themselves and had their quarrels, predilections, disagreements… European countries were governed by their elected official but ruled unofficially by the monarch's inner circle.
Deus Nobiscum /God With Us/ is a five-part documentary about the history of the Third Bulgarian Kingdom /1878-1947/ - a history shared with the rest of Europe. The rulers of Bulgaria were closely related to virtually all European dynasties. Relations between monarchs during this most dramatic period of global history led to much friction. Royalty interconnectedness was a kind of supra-parliamentary politics.
In the course of five episodes viewers will acquaint themselves with the architectural, cultural and political influence European powerhouses such as France, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium and Germany exerted on one of the truly ancient states in Europe, Bulgaria. The latter had just thrown off 500 years of Ottoman rule.
The history of Europe will never be complete without this Bulgarian-centric tale.
The fate of every one of the three Bulgarian monarchs of the modern era is redolent of a quiet and irreversible tragedy. Far from the glamorous royal life everyone imagines monarchs lead, not one of them enjoyed longevity and peace of mind. Their melancholic fate is the subject of a stylish and absorbing cinematic recreation that is faithful to the historical record.
