Should You Roll the Window Down For the Cops!?
Here's something I see all the time as a criminal defense attorney. Citizens who are trying to protect their rights put themselves in danger and escalate situations with the cops because they don't roll down their car window. But, the truth is, cops CAN ask for your driver's license and proof of insurance when you are operating a vehicle on public roads. They can also ask you to roll down your window because they will cite concerns for officer safety. If you don't comply, they will usually get away with dragging you out of your car through broken glass.
The best thing to do is to roll down your window and make the officer feel at ease. Provide your license and insurance with no arguing. BUT, that doesn't mean you should answer their questions and start talking. Invoke your 5th Amendment right to remain silent if they start asking you questions.
