Welcome to a 99-second-tutorial by Zeisys Technologies, on Infrastructure as a service, Platform as a Service, and Software as a Service.
Imagine Freddie, a software engineer, building a website.
He has to do a lot of things, besides developing code.
He has to run a server, deploy the code, and then periodically maintain the server.
Imagine, another software engineer, Sally.
She decides to use a leased server, from a cloud provider like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
This use-as-you-go server is charged by the hour, and costs mere pennies.
Sally doesn't have to buy, build, or run a server. She is said to use Infrastructure as a Service, to save her effort and money.
Imagine, a third engineer, Polly.
Polly decides to use a service, where the provider not only provides the server but also provides the deployment and server maintenance functions.
Polly can focus on just her core strength, which is developing code.
Everything else is rendered by the provider as, Platform as a Service.
Platform as a service, not only provides infrastructure but also bundles additional services and software, to provide you a platform.
Software as a service is another model where a provider gives you access to a software, for a monthly fee.
The best example is Microsoft Word. You can buy a one-time license for around $100, or you can get an Office-Online subscription for $3 per month.
SaaS has become so popular nowadays, that majority of the software in the market, is sold as SaaS.
To recap, Infrastructure as a service leases you hardware. Platform as a service provides you a bundle of hardware, software, and services. And software as a service, lets you use software for a monthly fee.
