Today I will be showing you, how the heart works or pumping of blood happens and also will brief you about the cardiac cycle.
First I am going to tell you how the heart works
The heart pumps the blood.
The Deoxygenated blood from the body reaches the right atrium then to the right ventricle.
Once it reaches the right ventricle it needs to pump to the lung to get oxygenated.
Then this oxygenated blood will come back to HEART, particularly to the left ventricle.
From left ventricle, it goes to Left atrium. This blood then GOES to the whole body to supply oxygen.
The heart never stops pumping the blood.
This is a continuous cycle which happens even when you’re sleeping.
Now I’m gonna show you the heart pump machine by using simple materials which is available at your home.
To build our heart model we need:
• 3 x plastic bottles with caps, labels removed.
• 4 x Bendy straws
• 3 Cups of water
• Food colouring -red
So let’s begin we need to make two holes in the two caps of the bottle this needs adult supervision one of the cap, need to have a big hole to put the straw; another one should be a small hole.
In the second cap, you need an equal size of two holes which the straw can go through.
Next step you need to attach Bendy straws to each other. we have four of them, we will make a long straw by fixing two of them.
Now fit this straw inside the bottle caps like how I have done through the hole.
Then fill the two bottles with the red colour water which are prepared by adding 2 to 3 drops of red food colour into the water.
Red is the preferred colour because as you all know the blood colour is red.
so the first bottle is the right atrium the MIDDLE bottle is the right ventricle and the third bottle is the lung so now when I Pump the right ventricle that is the MIDDLE bottle the blood will start flowing from the right atrium to RIGHT ventricle.
Pinch the straw that will act a valve and prevent it from flowing reverse.
Next, I’m going to pump the right ventricle and close the valve which is between the right atrium and right ventricle.
now the blood will start slow-flowing from the right ventricle to the lungs.
This is one of the most simple and effective ways of saying how the heart pumps.
You can reverse this HEART pump, now from lung oxygenated blood will flow to Left Ventricle, then from the left ventricle to the Right atrium that will supply the whole body.
I just love this experiment.
