In this video I will be taking yout to a tour of Khoai Haat, the most popular tourist spot in Bolpur Shantiniketan. Khoai is nothing but a undulating land form obtained by erosion of the characteristic granular red soil interspersed with sonajhuri trees. Each Saturday, this place comes to life as a weekly village market or "Haat" is arranged. Artisans from surrounding villages sell their handmade wares e.g. sarees, dress materials,earthen decorative items, tribal jewellery, bed sheets, many varieties of handicrafts and much more. As the artisans themselves bring their products directly to the market, the prices are comparatively lower than shops. Tourists, mostly from Kolkata throng this place to have a feel and taste of village life as apart from various makeshift shops, tribal women from the surrounding villages perform their dance with the drum beats and other simple musical instruments. Many people, mostly women are eager match their feet with the bright colored saree clad village women and make some donations to them. Even if you don't take part in the dance I bet you can't just resist tapping your feet to the tune of beats of drum. "Baul gaan" a typical genre of music that originated from this part of Bengal can be enjoyed here. Please remember this market is also known as "Sonajhuri Haat", or "Khoai Boner onyo haat" or ' Sanibarer haat'. When you are hungry, two restaurants, "Shakuntala Village Resort" and "Ram Shyam" are more than happy to serve you simple but sumptuous Bengali thalis in traditional manner. To sum it up, if you want a weekend getaway far from the madding crowd then this place is perfect for you to unwind, get a feel of abundant nature and fresh air, cultures and crafts that are still prevalent in rural Bengal. The place is very well connected to Kolkata by Eastern Railways and Bolpur Shantiniketan (BHP) is the nearest railhead. Prantik (PNE) is another railhead you can avail at almost the same distance. From both the stations you can avail Toto or battery powered rickshaws at very reasonable price to reach the place. If you want to stay there many options are available too.
