Write the 1/3 as a Decimal
In order to change 1/3 to decimal form we need to divide 1 by 3. We know that since 1 is smaller than 3 we are going to end up with a number less than 1.
We can divide 1/3 with a calculator or do it longhand. In this video I did the division longhand (but checked my answer with a calculator). When we divide 1 by 3, we get 0.3 (the 3 repeats)
So: 1/3 = 0.33...
0.33... is less than 1 so that is a good way to check if our answer is reasonable.
Note that 1/3 and 0.33... represent the same quantity, they are just written in different formats. 1/3 is a fraction and 0.33... is in decimal form.
