The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots play their home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts. The team is part of the East Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in the 1970 merger of the two leagues. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971, although Foxborough is a suburb 22 miles (35 km) away from downtown Boston.

The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football franchise based in Seattle, Washington. They are members of the National Football League (NFL) and the current Super Bowl champions. They are members of the NFC West division of the National Football Conference (NFC). The Seahawks joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Seattle Seahawks have no relation to the defunct Miami Seahawks of the All-America Football Conference. The Seahawks are owned by Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, and are currently coached by Pete Carroll. Since 2002, the Seahawks have played their home games at CenturyLink Field, located south of downtown Seattle. The Seahawks previously played home games in the Kingdome (1976–1999) and Husky Stadium (1994, 2000–2001).
Super Bowl XLIX, the 49th edition of the Super Bowl and the 45th modern-era National Football League (NFL) championship game, will decide the league champion for the 2014 season. It is scheduled to be played on February 1, 2015, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals. This will be the second Super Bowl played in that stadium, and the third one held in the Phoenix metropolitan area. As part of the new NFL network broadcasting agreement, NBC will serve as the game's broadcaster
