You may also hear them no matter when talking to your Chinese friends or watching Chinese movies. These Mandarins with a Beijing accent are not just being spoken by Beijingers, but many Chinese people of other provinces now. So knowing these Mandarins will help you to communicate with Chinese native speakers unimpeded.
