By the time of the clone wars, there were over 10,000 Jedi, with nearly all of them wielding a lightsaber. Through the machinations of Darth Sidious however, the Jedi were almost entirely wiped out by Order 66, with many of the survivors hunted down and defeated by Vader and the inquisitors shortly after. But this begs the question, what happened to all of the Jedi Lightsabers after Order 66?

The legends and canon answers to this are pretty similar, although I think the canon answer is a little bit more interesting. First of all we'll start with legends. One of the first things the empire did was to ban the use of lightsabers, except for of course Palpatine's loyal followers such as dark Jedi and Darth Vader. Anyone found in possession of a lightsaber without the proper imperial clearance would be treated as a Jedi and ruthlessly hunted down.

Bounty hunters that found and killed many of the surviving Jedi often kept these sabers as trophies or sold them on to high ranking imperials or crime lords. Darth Vader was also known to have a few lightsabers in his collection. Most notably, he displayed Obi-Wan Kenobi's saber as a centerpiece at his castle on Vajun after he defeated him on the Death Star.

In canon, the answer to the fate of the lightsabers is much more fleshed out. Just like in legends, the use of a lightsaber was banned by the Empire but of course, this law did not apply to Vader or any of his inquisitors. Strict regulations were placed upon the kyber crystal market and planets which contained them were strip mined for a secretive Imperial project.

The fate of the lightsabers that were once owned by the fallen members of the Jedi Order is the most sad of all. The once great Jedi temple had been converted into a palace as a symbol of Palpatine's new Empire. The Emperor's loyal servant Mas Amedda stood outside the temple, making a speech to a large crowd and countless others across the Galaxy's holonet. He explained that thanks to Palpatine, the galaxy was now free of the treacherous Jedi and that they needn’t be feared any longer. He went on to explain how the galaxy was now safe and that a new age of freedom had begun. As he spoke, clone troopers dumped hundreds of lightsabers into a giant furnace, all of which had been collected off the dead bodies of fallen Jedi. Mas Amedda then reached the pinnacle of his speech, proclaiming the end of tyranny as he threw a lightsaber into the furnace. The furnace roared to life as the flames engulfed the Jedi weapons. Suddenly a great blue blast of energy erupted as the kyber crystals were reduced to ashes.

And just like that, many of the Jedi’s honourable weapons, including Yoda's, were destroyed in a ball of plasma. However, few mourned the eradication of the Jedi or the incineration of their weapons. Palpatine turned the destruction of the Jedi lightsabers into a cause of celebration for many; his final mockery of the order that had once served and protected the entire galaxy.

The remaining lightsabers fell into the hands of trophy hunters and crime lords. Grakkus the Hutt was a well known collector of Jedi lore and even wore a necklace with several lightsabers around his neck. With many lightsabers destroyed and most of the remaining sabers in the hands of criminals, Jedi such as Ezra Bridger and even Luke Skywalker struggled to construct their lightsabers. The Empire did such a good job of hunting down Jedi and destroying their lightsabers that by the time of a Battle of Yavin, the mere ignition of a lightsaber was enough to turn heads even in a hive of scum and villainy like Mos Eisely.
